A Real Life Representation of the Modern Native American by Ideal and Dream Middle School

Last week we ended our first unit in Social Studies. The unit examined the lives of the early people or natives of the Americas. In the beginning of this unit the students would ask questions about the natives’ whereabouts in the present time. In our class discussions we talked about the reservations they now live on and how they are just like you or I. It seemed (initially) that many of the students preconceived notions and stereo types about natives hindered their understanding of them as a modern people. They asked questions like do they still dress in animal skins? Do they still live in tepees? Do they still hunt with bows and arrows? I decided then that I wanted an actual Native speaker to come to our class to be a real life representation of the modern Native American. As the weeks we progressed we held classroom discussions about the evolution of the lives of the American Natives and I began to see a shift in their thinking and perceptions. IDEAL and Dream School models and encourages students to become optimistic thinkers, goal oriented risk takers, innovative problem solvers and dynamic leaders.
What began for them as an obscure idea of a people based on stereo types, developed into a deeper understanding of the beauty of their culture as well as a an appreciation for all that our ancestors learned from them. Yesterday our Native guest speakers came. They shared stories passed down to them by their ancestors. They answered the students’ questions about their practices and beliefs. The one thing I felt most proud of is when the Natives began to question the students about their perception of Indians in an attempt to get the stereo typical answers from them, the students did not respond with that. For example when the Native asked, “What do you think about when you think about Indians?” The students responded with, “there are many different Indian tribes”, “they live all over the United States”, “they helped the Europeans”, etc. Our guests were taken aback by their responses. We concluded the visit by writing thank you notes to Everett and Van (native speakers). The students were instructed to be specific in what they were thankful for. Their notes were eloquent, well thought out, and sincere. They not only showed their gratitude for the experience, but it also demonstrated the value of increasing their cultural awareness. ~
