UK Unable to Cope with Winter Freeze
The UK is in chaos after several days of intense winter weather and snowfall.
Roads are littered with abandoned vehicles in many of the worst hit parts of the country. Many were attempting to retrieve their vehicles as temperatures began to increase a little today. Some people had found themselves trapped in their cars overnight in sub zero temperatures.
Public transport systems have also been disrupted. Eurostar high speed trains to and from Europe have suffered break downs due to the ingress of snow into the trains power compartment. Around 2000 passengers were stranded for up to 16 hours in the tunnel beneath the English Channel. Some suffered panic attacks and many complained about the lack of information, food and water.
After three consecutive days with no service Eurostar have now begun to resume normal operation of their high speed train service. They now have huge passenger backlogs to deal with in both France and the UK.
The National Health service has told people to stay at home unless their journey is essential. Hospitals have reported unprecedented numbers of people injured as a result of falling on icy pavements.
With Christmas only days away many people are being forced to venture onto icy pavements in order to carry out their Christmas shopping. This is forcing many people to go out onto dangerous, icy footpaths.
People are already discussing how badly the UK has managed this latest period of wintery weather. Local councils have been quick to treat main road surfaces with grit and salt but many smaller side roads and pavements have remained untreated.
Back in February 2009 the UK spent several weeks in sub-zero arctic temperatures that wreaked havoc on transportation disrupted schools and work for many people. This latest period of bad weather has prompted many people to ask why the UK suffers so much when winter comes along.
