White Band
Do wood pigeons know they have a white band across their wings?
I cycle alot and always pass a few wood pigeons on the way to work, they always amuse me with their plump appearance. As they fly off a big bright band of white is across their wings, I know this is a really stupid question but do you think they know they have those white bands?
Your question is not stupid.
Since animals can’t talk, we really don’t have the ability to know how ‘self aware’ they are.
This is the word on the street.
Patty Pigeon might not aware of her own markings, but has those markings imprinted in her bird-brain since she was a nestling. She knows that Wally Wood Pigeon, with his coloring and his song, is “in the game” for her, but Randy Rock Pigeon is just not where it is at because of his colors and song, which sounds foreign to her.
A lot of complex coloring in what looks like ‘generic brown birds’ can only be seen in UV light, by the way, a spectrum that we can’t see.
I have also noticed that animals are not fooled by mirrors. Our kittens look in the mirror and they don’t hiss, because they know it is not another cat. They orient themselves much more by smell than by sight. My pet doves also do not respond to mirrors by thinking it is another dove. They somehow ‘know’ that they are not looking at another dove.
