What were/are your top three requirements for choosing a university or college, and why? If you have already attended the school, did it meet your requirements?

small classes — yes, it met that
knowledgeable profs that aren’t jerks — yes it met that
close to home – it met that one too

since then i’ve learned that it’s all about personal preference and any perceived differences in quality of education are illusory, so these are the sorts of criteria i suggest when i advise high schoolers (i.e. criteria that are based on tangible preferences, not the mythical “reputation” as strongly as some seem to consider it).
