Wee King

Wee King
My 4 month old King Charles keeps wee-ing in the house. How can I change her habits?

First – PLEASE DO NOT RUB YOUR DOGS NOSE IN HER PEE. This will not teach her anything other than to fear you. She will not associate your punishment with her behavior because it will be too far removed from her action of peeing.

At four months of age, she will need to go to the bathroom a minimum of every 4 hours and possibly more often depending on how you feed and water her. The average is that a young dog can hold her bladder/bowels one hour for each month of age (4 months = 4 hours).

Depending on the severity of the problem, I would tell you to take her to the vet and make sure she doesn’t have a bladder or kidney issue. She probably doesn’t, but may if she is peeing excessively or drinking constantly.

To modify her behavior, put her on a tight schedule. Feed on a schedule – giving her food in one location 2 – 3 times a day for a fixed time (usually 15 – 20 minutes – taking away any food not eaten in that time frame). Some people fear their dog will starve, but they won’t. Just like children, they will sometimes refuse to eat. This will just make them more likely to eat well at the next meal. If a dog is off it’s food (refuses to eat) for more than a days worth of meals, then become concerned and try enticements of treats. If you can’t get the dog to eat, then take her to the vet.

For the peeing, she probably hasn’t figured out that you want her to go outside and you are giving her too much freedom.

Do a thorough cleaning of your flooring – rent or buy a floor scrubber (carpet or hardwood depending on your flooring). Wash all blankets, throw rugs and coverings that she may have peed on. Use an enzymatic cleaner (you can get this at a pet store) – it will eliminate all biomatter (urine and feces) from your environment and prevent her from returning to her “favorite” pee and poop spots. Dogs use their nose to help them decide where to go.

Next put a collar and leash on your dog. She goes where you go and you keep her with you at all times when she is in the house. You have to watch her closely – when she starts “looking” for a place to potty – take her outside immediately and give her encouragement (i.e. “Go potty, go potty). Reward lavishly when she does go outside (i.e. a favorite toy, play a favorite game, give a favorite treat). Use the toy, game or treat only as a reward for going outside to potty.

When you can’t have her attached to you or you need to leave her home alone, put her in a crate that is big enough for her to turn around and lie down comfortably in. If it is too big, she will learn to go potty in it and if it is too small you can actually cause her physical harm. At 4 months of age, SHE SHOULD NOT BE LEFT ALONE FOR MORE THAN 4 HOURS! Either come home every four hours to let her out or get a neighbor or friend to help – there are also dog walking services or daycare for your dog – depending on your area.

At five months she will be able to go for 5 hours – six months 6 hours – etc.

You should find that it only takes about a week of doing these steps consistently before she will start letting you know that she needs to go outside. You will learn what her signal is. Everyone should be much happier then – because your puppy only wants to make you happy and probably doesn’t understand what is making you unhappy right now.

I hope this helps. PLEASE REMEMBER – DON’T PUNISH THE DOG FOR GOING IN THE HOUSE – REWARD THE DOG FOR GOING OUTSIDE THE HOUSE.
