The effects of commercial drum and bass on the vinyl industry
Online retailer www.vinylsearcher.com has reported that sales of house music have declined to a point that it is not worth stocking, this is the same for garage music except for certain areas of the USA. The one exception is drum and bass records, pioneers like andy c with his ram records crew have stormed the market gaining crediblilty from hardcore dnb fans to mainstream listeners.
radio 1 plays dnb all the time, but most people wouldnt even recognise it as dnb, its just the sound of now. 2010 had the release of nightlife 5 which fused 60 tracks into a 1 hour mix and took drum and bass to a new level vinyl sales followed and dnb was selling well on vinyl, otherwise vinyl sales declined as more and more famous dj like tiesto moved to digital formats.
MP3s are so easy to obtain thanks to the internet the music industry suffers more and more. Some of the hardcore djs still wont shift and lovers of the deeper sound still believe vinyl is the only true format for djing in the real world.
Other areas of the globe vinyl has vanished, recently a dj in india commented that the only place they see vinyl anymore is in museums, this is very telling, prices of vinyl are just far to high for these countries for it to even be a option. so now in 2011 vinyl sales are good but mainly older hardcore classics are selling and represses of older tracks. Dnb is still showing a good incline of sales, even with new released, it fits with the scene to have a record box not a ipod.
