Strictly Rhythm
How strict should I apply Music Theory when voicing instruments? [composition]?

I am an amateur composer using Sibelius 5 to create some compositions. I know enough Music Theory from my being in ensembles to compose pieces while having regards to the key it’s in, using melody/harmonies, knowing rhythms, and knowing basic chord progressions.

The biggest problem I encounter when composing is that I always want strictly stay with the Theory, but at the same time, I want to voice ideas that I come up with. Now I guess the real question is, should I always be thinking about the Theory when voicing instruments. For example, if I have a minor triad playing for a measure (root, 3rd, 5th), and at the same time insert a melody (in the same key, of course), do I have to think about how every note in that melody fits in with the chord. For example, if one note of the melody is a 4th, another a 7th, and so on. Do I have to know what the type of chord is for every different note? How strict should music theory be in composition?

I believe voice leading is one of the items from music theory that benefits following closely. It very much improves the sound of a piece if its voiced well. With that said, if you have a good reason to ignore the rule (ie: not just because it sounds ok as it is but because there is a point to how you are moving the lines) then it is justifiable to not follow the rules strictly. The reason why I mentioned needing a better reason than something sounding ok is because it might sound better if you did follow voice leading principals – so just because it sounds fine isn’t a strong enough reason to bypass the principals. I believe voice leading is something that should be worked on, studied, and practiced with the intent of getting better at it. It will help make your music sound polished and the listener might not understand exactly why it sounds better, but they’ll perceive it as quality.
