Animation: Straight Ahead Action and Pose to Pose?
We`re learning this in animation class now, but I`ve missed 2 classes because of illness and am so confused. I came in third day of this lesson and have no idea what this concept of straight ahead and pose to pose is? Can someone explain? Maybe some examples of actual movies/cartoons/etc that use either one of these? (i`m a very visual learner)

Ok I’m an animator so I’ll try to explain it to you as best as I can. When your starting your animation you will get your scenes with the layouts, storyboard and dope sheets or exposure sheets or what is commonly known in animation as x-sheets.The x-sheets provides you the length of exposure of your scene on screen. It also provides the dialogue and action required for the scene and has some thumbnail sketches by the director to give you a guide on what is going to happen in the scene. Ok now to your question about pose to pose and straight ahead animation.Pose to pose animation means that you follow each pose given by the layout for your animation, example from your starting pose at pose1 you need to finish your action up to pose5 so you’ll do your animation by poses its more like a step-by-step process and its safer to use than straight ahead provided that the layout artist followed the storyboard accurately. Straight ahead animation is just as it says, you animate straight ahead and not restricted by the poses given by the layout. Its like doing animation in freestyle.Read the storyboards and analyze what is needed in the scene, you can still follow the layout but you are no longer restricted to the poses given. Remember the poses given by the layout are just guides. You have more freedom in movement, its great if you like to put more adlibs to the movement but one drawback to this is that you may over-animate your scene. Most straight ahead animations are done in features where you have more freedom in movement than in TV series. I’m sorry coz’ I don’t have any examples for you to see and I hope you understand my explanation or are you still confused? Anyway I hope this helps.
