The Walkman walks on at 30

The Sony Walkman, the grand daddy of portable music players like the iPod is now thirty years old.  Like humans, this machine is old and overweight. Sluggish too is the tape transport inside the very first cassette tape I bought to play on it, The Knack featuring My Sharona.

Kids of this century could never have imagined that once upon a time in this planet Earth, music could only be enjoyed through a stereo system at home or in a car. And, that one could literally get all tangled up in tape when the lowly Philips Compact Cassette provides the main ingredient for a pasta meal inside the Walkman, that then masticated it briefly and rudely spat it out.

Despite the bad habits of the Walkman, it changed life and music forever.

I invited my kid to try out the device. My kid however is a girl, the wrong gender perhaps to solicit this kind of opinion.

My last Walkman, the Sony WM-FX3 with
Dolby B, auto-reverse and digital tuning.

Anyway, I told her that this was the iPod of my era. She was immediately turned off by the color, a mix of black and charcoal grey that I though was quite edgy (then).

The shining moment was when she gushed any Walkman will definitely be hard to lose. It sounded like a good thing but somehow her statement oozed sarcasm. She then wanted to ‘shuffle’ through the captivating Steely Dan tape. Shuffle is a function that randomly selected music tracks to play. it didn’t exist yet, but dang, it did the auto-reverse at a flick of a button!

History gives Steely Dan’s Walter Becker and Donald Fagen the last, hearty laugh on this, the crown jewel in their remarkable canon of ’70s Mensa pop. Sneaking onto the charts a half-decade earlier with sinuous, jazz-inflected “rock,” the dysfunctional duo’s acerbic, anti-heroic visions had been critically lauded for their band identity and killer guitar riffs, then promptly challenged when the t…
