Stand Back
When is it okay to stand back and let people come to you?
I sort of feel that when I’m the “new person” that other people should come to me and introduce themselves, start talking, etc. My mom says “You can’t just wait around for people to come to you.”
What are your opinions? Is there any time when it’s not your responsibility to talk to people first?
For example when you’re the “new kid in class”. I feel that since I’m the new one, others should be coming to me to help me out and show me around. Am I correct?
There’s a balance needed here. Some new kids come on way to strongly. Maybe it’s a case of nerves, but I think in being overly eager, they misrepresent themselves and even attach to the wrong people too soon. I think you should say hi, get involved in sports, clubs, or wherever your interests lie, be yourself, and let friendships develop naturally. Be a good observer, a good listener, and maintain a pleasant disposition.
