Sonny Rollins

Sonny Rollins
What albums should I begin with for Sonny Rollins and Sun Ra?

Alright, well I am relatively new to jazz, only listened to the big names like Miles, Coltrane, Monk…
Want to get into Rollins and Sun Ra, but I read that Ra’s discography is like one of the biggest ever, so I’m a little overwhelmed by him.

Also, any other recommendations? I was looking into Chet Baker and Charlie Parker as well, but would rather not rush into jazz. It seems like too cool of a genre for such a thing.
Yeah I heard Heron’s new song, New York Is Killing Me, and loved it! I didn’t know he was jazz though, I will have to check him out as well.

Notable albums by Sonny Rollins: Saxophone Colossus, Way Out West, A Night At The Village Vanguard, Tenor Madness, The Bridge

Don’t know that much about Sun Ra, but check out www.allmusic.com for a complete discography for both Sonny and Sun.

Some other recommendations:

Charlie Parker with Strings by Charlie Parker
Alone by Bill Evans
Art of the Trio Vol. 1-5 by Brad Mehldau
Tales from the Hudson by Michael Brecker
Inner Urge by Joe Henderson
Maiden Voyage by Herbie Hancock
Virtuoso by Joe Pass
Mingus Ah Um by Charles Mingus

That should get you started….

And what a day it was: nearly 60 jazz musicians, gathered on a Harlem street one morning in 1958 for what photographer Art Kane rightly, if immodestly, calls “the greatest picture of that era of musicians ever taken” (incredibly, it was also Kane’s first professional shoot). Like Ken Burns’s Jazz, this 60-minute documentary, an Oscar nominee in 1995, is a mixed-media affair: still photographs and …

When a jazz musician plays a solo that lasts for a full 15 minutes, not one of which is less than inspired, powerful, and entertaining; and when he later, in the midst of an inventive and witty unaccompanied solo, exuberantly leaps from the stage, breaks his heel in the process, and continues to play on his back…. Well, you know you’re witnessing something special. And so it is with tenor s…
