Retro gaming- because we still love those old games
With the retro fad in full swing at the moment with everyone buying retro bags, clothes and anything with the word ‘retro’ stuck in front of it, we’re going to take alook at retro gaming. Retro gaming sees people digging out their old consoles and taking a trip down memory lane with old games that havent been played in years. Sonic, Pacman, Tetris and the Mario Bros to name but a few. One of retro gamings advantages is that it can be a cheap hobby- picking up an old console and games for less than the latest models. Yes, it wont be as technically impressive, but those games still are alot of fun to play -heres afew we still get misty eyed over.
Tetris. Nintendo had the brilliant idea of selling Tetris with their new hand held console, the game boy, which ended up clocking up 27 million consoles sold worldwide. The aim is simple, different shaped blocks drop down from the top of the screen and by making a line you make it disapear. The more levels you go through the faster to game will get, trying to make you fail to clear the blocks and get game over. Tetris was easy to pick up and play, yet impossible to put down. It appealed to everyone in the family, so even your grandparents could be caught playing it.
Pacman. Everyone in their late thirties/ early forties will remember Pacman. An arcade game, basically you guided Pacman, a yellow ball with a mouth, around a maze trying to eat all the white balls without getting caught by the ghosts. When Pacman was released in 1980 the whole world went crazy for the game and books, songs, and various merchandise was made in the name of the yellow ball.
The Super Mario Bros. Mario was at one point, better known in the ninties than Mickey Mouse. First appearing in the game Donkey Kong, and dubbed ‘Jumpman’, Mario and his brother Luigi got their break on the NES console from Nintendo in the eighties, and didnt look back. The Mario bros had to save princess Peach from the clucthes of a giant dinsoaur named Bowser, this would require them to jump on turtle shells, collect coins and use mushrooms and stars as powerups. Mario has appeared in a wide range of games- from kart racing, to sports such as tennis and golf, to RPGs and puzzle games.
