How To Play Finger Picking Patterns
Diversify your guitar playing by adding finger picking styles! There are hundreds of finger picking styles and patterns you can lean to play. Watch the video from start to finish to see each fingerpicking pattern.I suggest practicing each pattern separately until they are easy for you to play. Then try the next pattern. The finger picking patterns are progressively more difficult to play. As you are practicing the patterns, you may want to try taping yourself to see how even it sounds.
There are a couple ideas that can help you. First, try to relax your hands after each pluck. Most guitar players hold too much tension in their hands. Another idea is to practice slowly and switch to the chords without a pause. Visualize the next chord in advance.
One of the popular picking patterns you will learn is the Travis Picking Pattern. Travis picking is a style of playing that is commonly used to refer to an alternating thumb-picked bass line over which a syncopated melody is picked on the treble strings. Merle Travis made this pattern famous.
Use these patterns with other songs and as a spring board for making up other finger picking patterns. You will be able to play these patterns without even thinking about it. Playing can be like walking. It is a lot of work in the beginning, but if you concentrate on playing with good technique it can become natural to you.
