What some simple things I can do to maintain/protect my high mileage vehicle?
I have a 95 jeep wrangler with almost 150,000 miles on it. What are some SIMPLE things I can do to protect/maintain the engine? Besides for routine oil changes I haven’t done much. I’ve been looking at some fuel injection cleaners (the additive) is this a good Idea? What product would you best recommend? Any other suggestions?
1. Check if you have a distributor cap/rotor or ignition coils. In either case, preventive maintenance advice will be the same since you cannot repair an ignition coil.
2. Take care what you put into your motor as an additive for vehicles over 100,000 miles. A lot of times the gunk in those motors could very well be what holds the engine together now. A good additive might do exactly as it says, but your vehicle might end up running worse. In any case, LUCAS additives are the best.
3. Consider installing a K&N air filter for added air intake. If you do, you never have to purchase another air filter again because you merely have to clean them every 50,000 miles. I had a Tornado max airflow system in my car in addition to a K&N filter, but you might want to consider that further because I heard that they could posibly lead to a vibrating intake manifold.
4. Change spark plugs before dealing with the fuel injection system. Your OEM gap is .035″ on Champion plugs, but if you purchase another brand you may have to use another gap, if gapping will be necessary at all. BOSCH puts out well made plugs as do most German parts companies.
5. Consider professional fuel system flushing as your only alternative for the fuel injection system. There are fuel injection ‘kits’ that replace the tops and bottoms of the injectors, but if you know your mechanic he/she might get a shop discount at a local aftermarket parts supplier and pass the savings on to you. If not, you can always consider purchasing the kits separately. For the actual fuel injectors, think of them as a $115 spark plug- it better be made of gold. Besides, the deposit alone on those miniscule machines is at least $100. Having a professional cleaning will mean you won’t have to deal with it moreover in the months to come.
For FUEL cleaners, I would recommend changing the fuel filter- very easy to do by yourself- you’ll just need a fuel filter key to get in there and loosen the plastic locking mechanism on the old one, or, since its located on the old part, you could just take some extra time and use a pair of pliers and fight that thing off. Be sure to use a pan to catch the excess fuel. You might want to go ahead and have the new filter ready to install after memorizing the direction of flow. As always, though, observe visually the old and new parts before attempting any removal to verify if you have the correct part.
Keeping a list pf part numbers will be the most effective tool in helping you provide future preventive maintenance- no need to research again what has already been done.
