Can you buy boats at the southampton boat show?
Of course you can. As others have observed: it is the main point of the show. But you should not necessarily expect to be able to put the money down and walk away with a shiny new craft. Like buying a new telly, or even, to a certain extent, a new car.
Producers displaying boats will have usually agreed with existing customers for permission to ‘show’ their boat. Which they have already paid (or are in the process of paying) for. And for whom they have just completed it. (Very ‘just’, in my experience – as in: while she is being loaded onto the truck to go to the show!)
And if you order one yourself, then they will have to build it first.
[So don't pay for it all at once - wait until you see the finished boat before making the final payment!]
Clients purchasing big boats normally pay in installments referred to as ‘stage payments’: these keep the builder solvent, allowing them to run the business (pay their rent, tax, wages, buy materials etc.) while not involving the clients’ parting with the full sum before taking delivery of their pride and joy.
(Very often anyway, the ‘final price’ is not altogether a known ‘variable’ until the vessel is completed).

And don’t go mad – remember: a good rule-of-thumb is that the running costs of an average boat, from the largest superyacht to the most modest weekender is about ten percent of the purchase cost – per year.
In other words, in ten years time you will have paid as much again just running the boat as you payed to buy it!
