Everything That You Need To Know About An Expedited United States Passport Name Change
In order to travel beyond the borders of our country, every citizen from an infant on up to a full grown adult must acquire a passport. There are many steps to this process. Once a passport is received, at some point, it may be necessary to change a person’s name for a plethora of different reasons. You should understand that expedited U.S. passport name change has many steps of its own that need to be followed.
A variety of reasons exist why someone would have to change their name on a passport. For each specific circumstance, there is a new set of rules and guidelines that must be followed. Marriage, court order, and adoption are a few of these reasons. Each different example of a name change carries along with its own requirement and fees for obtaining a new passport.
In cases of marriage or legal name change within a year of the date a passport was issued, changing the name on a passport can be done through the mail. Someone trying to change their name needs to send the government their old valid passport and a completed DS-5504 form with name change application. Documentation, like a marriage license or court order proving the name change, must also be produced.
Different guidelines must be followed if the original new passports was issued for more than year after a name is changed. This process can also be done over the postal service. In this case, one must send their old passport with a correctly filled out DS-82 form to the government. They will also need to supply legal documents proving the change in identity and two recent photographs with payment costs.
Failure to produce documents will cause a person to physically go to a passport agency. While at this government building, people trying to get a new passport must produce their old passport, a DS-11 form, and pay a first time fee for the new name. All final judgments will be made by officials working at these government offices.
To prove identity in cases when no legal documentation of the name change exists, the government will require other items to document the name change. The officials at the agency will need to be provided with 3 public records with the new or assumed name. This name change must be in place for at least five years. Two recent photographs must be provided or taken while at this office.
Children need passports to travel the same as adults. For a child to change their name on a passport, both guardians and child must be present at the agency. A birth certificate with both names of guardians on it, adoption decrees, and legal documentation of the name change must accompany the child to the office. A completed DS-11 form and parents personal identification papers must also be provided.
Each different situation has its own rules regarding issuing a passport to someone who has changed their name. A passport name change can take as long as getting the original passport but must be done in order to travel outside of the country. A person who uses a passport with another name on it will not make it through customs, especially when trying to enter the United States.
