Sealed Psych

High Pain threshold and pain tolerance?
Pain threshold is the point at which a person becomes aware of pain. Pain tolerance is the length of time it takes someone to remove their arm from ice water (once the pain becomes intolerable).
I have both an extremely high pain tolerance but my threshold is also high- I percieve the pain at its earliest stages.
Those with high pain tolereance usually have a low pain threshold- they can tolerate incredible injury because their physical ability to *feel* it is not as strong.
I can feel incredible pain, but I can also tolerate it longer than anyone I have ever met. It’s like the part of my brain that should CARE has been switched off. I once had 200 pounds of metal fall on my head and cut open my scalp and my first response was to look for duct tape to seal it…
Is there a medical condition or psych condition that can account for both an extreme ability to tolerate pain marked with a very high sensitivity to it… it almost seems an oxymoron. Thank you.
I definitly do not have a high tolerance for pain. As a matter of fact before I expect the pain I feel it. Also if I am having a medical procedure done that I really prefer not to have I feel pain before the doctor even arrives. If on the other hand I were to welcome a medical procedure because I suffer from a specific ailment, and really want something more than pain management, I usually don’t feel the pain from the procedure. I do believe that in some people(myself included), the whole sensitivity, and the tolerance of pain is psychological.
