how can I get my old rotary phone ringer to work?
I have 2 old rotary phones. I have replaced the original direct wires to modular connections.
For some reason I cannot get the ringers to work.
Does anyone know how to resolve this problem?
As originally wired (pre-modular), most phone instrument cords had three wires: green, red, and yellow. Red and green are the “talk” conductors (just as now), and the yellow wire was used for different ringer modes on party lines and such. Generally, it was connected to the same terminal as the green wire at the baseboard terminal block, which typically only had two wires anyway. When you changed to the modular cord you probably either replicated the same wiring colors, or perhaps connected only the (new) red and green wires, since they are actually the only ones used. In either event the yellow ringer wire — and thus the ringer — is now connected to nothing.
You’ll need to go back into the phone, locate where the original yellow wire was (perhaps terminal “G”), and internally jumper it to the same terminal as the old (and new) green wire (hopefully terminal “L1″). Or, if there is only one wire on terminal “G” and it comes from the ringer, you can simply move that wire to the green/L1 terminal instead of fabricating a jumper.
The new modular yellow and black wires should be taped off and not connected inside the phone at all. Good luck!
