Is the thief in heaven right now or is his soul asleep until the second coming?

Luke 23:43- And Jesus said to him: Amen I say to thee, this day thou shalt be with me in paradise.

How do you manage to get that question from that verse? He’s alive and well in heaven ,thank you, and he just meant that WE wouldn’t see him until he came back. Or until he died. Wow, of all the ways to misinterpret the bible. . . How is he a thief?
