Record Breaking Easter Getaway
An astonishing two thirds of all of the UK’s cars were on the road last weekend in what has been described as the biggest ever Easter Getaway.
Deteriorating weather and strike action by one ferry company played havoc with travel plans, however, as large numbers of Rescue My Car customers called for breakdown support.
Many of the breakdown issues were caused by engine overheating as cars got stuck in long tailbacks created by the millions of extra cars clogging up the road network on Friday.
And it wasn’t just the usual traffic hotspots that caught drivers out. The M5 through Somerset, the M3 into Hampshire, and the M55 towards Blackpool were all badly affected according to our breakdown recovery drivers as a result of more than 20 million cars hitting the road in one day. That number is thought to be more than four million higher than the previous record and it left just 11 million cars sat on driveways and in garages.
Explaining the apparent exodus Rescue My Car’s Craig Astbury said: ‘It was always going to be a busy Easter on Britain’s roads as the economic climate is beginning to ease and we are all feeling a little more comfortable with spending again.
‘This combined with the fact that we have done relatively little for 12 months or more and the horrendous weather was always going to cause congestion as everyone attempted to get away.’
‘Thankfully, despite a busy period for our breakdown teams, we were able to get to our customers as normal and solve any breakdown issues they had,’ he added.
Analysts went on to blame two factors for this. First, there was a desire to enjoy a break after a cold winter that was largely spent indoors. Second, the economic recovery is putting more money in peoples’ pockets, and they are now starting to spend it again.
