Record Albums
How did they record albums and music back in the 1960′s -70′s?
Just wondering if they (bands in general) had to record the whole song at once, or what? Take an old song like Kashmir by Led Zeppelin, which is around 7 minutes +…. did they have to record that all at once?
A lot of american bands from that era did their own vocals, but used a group of west coast studio musicians called the Wrecking Crew, for the backing tracks. Motown used a group of studio musicians called the Funk Brothers. New Orleans productions often used the Meters to back up on the tracks. Led Zep would often play live in the studio, then make corrections on individual tracks. If the producer was unhappy with a part, then it would be re done. Page has an alternative take on Stairway To Heaven that is locked up in a vault. When string parts were added, they would be recorded separately, using the band track as a reference. Phil Spector was famous for his Wall Of Sound concept. All parts would be recorded at the same time and then the vocals were done last. A lot of bands could not really play live and sound as good as their records. But there was a few bands that could tear it up live and their fans would often argue that they sounded better live than they did in the studio.
