The Surgery Department At The Everett Clinic: A Discussion With Dr. Goodman
Overview
The Everett Clinic offers a comprehensive surgical program with board certified surgeons of the highest caliber performing more than 3,000 surgeries per year – which equates to outstanding, up-to-date surgical skills. In this interview, Dr. Goodman addresses surgery, The Everett Clinic, and the expertise of the Department’s surgeons.
Interview with Dr. John Goodman, MD, The Everett Clinic
INTERVIEWER: What are the top reasons that somebody should come to The Everett Clinic for surgical services?
DR. GOODMAN: I think The Everett Clinic offers a very rich surgery department in terms of its depth of knowledge and skills and availability. The other thing is that the surgeons work together as a team, so there’s consistency of care. The Clinic also has a system, where we communicate with the primary care doctors, the hospice, the anesthesia team and it’s all available on our electronic record. It’s up-to-date and we can see the scans or images of x-rays from home if we need to consult on the phone. From the office, from the surgery, it’s the up-to-date modern system. It benefits the patient, because it’s very frustrating for patients to talk to a doctor who really doesn’t know what’s happening, or doesn’t have the current information up-to-date.
INTERVIEWER: If you were trying to describe to a friend what makes The Everett Clinic different, and why someone should go their surgical department, what would you say?
DR. GOODMAN: We have expertise and skilled surgeons who are so good that the University of Washington wants us to train their residents. We do a high volume of surgery, so we know what’s current and what our outcomes are, and I think that’s terribly important. We have a combination of experience, volume and expertise that isn’t found many places in many communities.
INTERVIEWER: What do you look for when you’re trying to bring a new surgeon into the department?
DR. GOODMAN: A surgeon who has good recommendations on his general qualities as an individual, and relates to people’s understanding of their issues. And also, we look for a good surgeon who is very well-trained, often with special expertise such as surgical oncology and perhaps advanced fellowship training. And someone who has a proven track record in their training, who we would want to operate on our family members as well, not just to fill a position in the office.
INTERVIEWER: You specialize particularly in a few different areas and procedures. What are the top three things that a patient should know when they’re considering some of these procedures?
DR. GOODMAN: I think that a surgeon’s training – he or she should be board certified by all means. I think it also matters what their experience is. I think we all know that we’d rather have someone who’s done hundreds or thousands of procedures than someone who’s just starting. I think that the training is very important, that they’ve had training that supports being an expert in what they’re doing. And I think outcomes count. I think, like in The Everett Clinic, you’ve got to be good or The Everett Clinic doesn’t want you. And you’ve got to be better than good really. But there’s a minimum standard; your peers are judging you all the time. It’s not just holding an office and hoping no one notices you, or your outcomes. It’s quite the contrary there.
With more than 300 physicians, 1,500 staff and 16 locations throughout Snohomish County, The Everett Clinic provides care for more than 250,000 patients annually. The Everett Clinic has three pharmacies, two surgery centers with advanced technology, and eight urgent care Walk-In Clinics. The Everett Clinic is nationally recognized, locally owned physician group practice.
Choosing The Everett Clinic means choosing the best medical care possible in Snohomish County. The clinic offers everything from two out-patient surgery centers to advanced technology (CT angiography and 3D image-guided surgery, to artificial intelligence, capsule endoscopy, advanced robotics), mental health, vision, hearing centers and eight walk-in clinic locations throughout the county. The Everett Clinic is more than able to get you The right care, for the whole you.
