Plastic Ono Band: John Lennon’s 1st Solo Album
Plastic Ono Band, John Lennon’s first solo album after leaving The Beatles, is also his best in my opinion. The album contains Lennon’s most emotionally intense songs. Not to say that he didn’t release more great songs after this album, but I do think the rest of his recording career is a slight let down when compared to this truly excellent debut.
The album opens up with “Mother.” You can really hear Lennon working through the issues of his childhood in this song. For anyone who does not know his bio that means singing about his mother and father leaving him to grow up with his aunt. And when he was 17 his mom was killed by an off duty drunk police officer. This is what “My Mummy’s Dead” is referencing.
The second track, “Hold On,” is a very simple song that might be seen as “filler” especially with the silly “cookie!” that you can hear at about 1 minute into it (which I love.) But I personally really love the song.
This album contains some of his most heavy recordings including “I Found Out” which has a great dirty guitar riff and some really great lyrics and “Well Well Well” which showcases the “primal scream” technique he had been using in his therapy at the time.
The instrumental part of “Look at Me” sounds a lot like “Julia” from The White Album but that’s never kept me from enjoying it. It is such a pretty song that I can’t resist it. I think what really makes this album work so well is the contrast between the very delicate sweet songs like “Look at Me,” “Love,” and “Hold On” and the very intense tracks such as “Working Class Hero,” “I Found Out,” and “Well Well Well.” And then there’s “God” which isn’t that great musically but I do think it has some of his best lyrics.
