Hooray I got a new camera for my birthday!…wait I don’t really know how to use it.?

lol. It’s an EOS Digital Rebel XT (silver)

http://www.avdeals.com/cameras/largeimages/eos-digital-rebel-xt_slv.jpg

but it has so many features, buttons and manuals I’m basically lost…here are some of my concerns:

1) I want to take sports photography (tennis) but I’m not sure how to increase the shutter speed.

2) Can I put a larger more powerful lens on it…if so what would you recommend for sports?

3) I took pictures in my house and they’re kind of dark what do I do to make them look not so terrible.

4) What do all of the little symbols and letters (A-DEP,M,Av etc.,) mean?

5) What’s a CF card and why don’t I have one in the camera already? (plus where do I get one?)

Also if you could help me past these questions maybe as I start to learn how to use it I would really appreciate it!

…man photography is harder than I thought.

Your best bet for taking sport photos is just go to auto mode and experiment with that until you become familiar with the camera/photography/etc. I’m sure that your camera as a scene feature, so set it to sports.

If not than go under M (manual) and adjust the shutter speed up but again experiment with different levels, however with M (manual mode) you will also have to set the aperture and film speed or ISO in the case of digital cameras.

Its as simple as turning on the flash or you can adjust the light sensitivity.

Av = aperture priority, it allows you to adjust the aperture. Aperture sets the focus from something in the foreground to something in the background measured in f-stops.

M = manual mode, you must set the setting for all the features, shutter speed, ISO, aperture, etc.

My camera doesn’t have A-DEP so I don’t know about that one.
