Is Patti Labelle a racist?
On Clash of the Choirs, Patti Labelle said that it is good a white guy on MIchael Boltons group can sing like a black guy. Would you find this to be a racist comment?
No. Patti Labelle basically said the exact same thing that Michael Bolton said earlier in the piece. If you remember, when he picked the guy in the first place, Michael Bolton said that the reason he picked him is because he was a white guy who didn’t sound white (basically meaning that sounded black – which incidentally I don’t agree with at all – to me he sounds like a white guy with a raspy voice). Why he would pick a guy solely for that purpose or felt the need to lead off with that comment, I do not know. Geesh. Just pick a guy with a good voice and leave it at that – if you make sure that the voices blend you’ll be fine.
That aside, I don’t think that Michael Bolton meant anything negative by it either – I think that Michael Bolton sees himself as having a soulful voice (as do a lot of other people – not me though) and he picked someone who was a bit like himself. Just like Patti picked people who sing very much like her. So, since Bolton said it first, I think that she was just echoing back and agreeing with what he said.
