Past Present

The Ghosts of Christmas Past,Present,Future in a Christmas Carol?
1) What is the message of the changes capitalism has brought to england from the ghosts of christmas past present and future?
2) what will occur if we do not listen to the ghosts?
To best understand Dickens we must first understand the time that he was living in. No one really celebrated Christmas and it was mainly a normal working day. Queen Victoria was the first person to have a Christmas tree in the UK as she brought it back from Germany as Prince Albert was German. Dickens and Queen Victoria are responsible for bringing us Christmas traditions as we know them. In the 1950′s we got Santa as we know him in his red suit thanks to Coca Cola. The notion of being “Christmassy” was unknown until Dickens and Victoria. People took this romantic vision of a family sitting down to a goose to their hearts (turkeys came later from the USA). Capitalisim as opposed to what? The UK has never been communist so we have always had to work for what we achieve. I suppose although people have more money now, Christmas hasn’t really changed – we still want to have a nice dinner, some good presents and have family around. The ghosts in the story only serve to show that we need family in order to be a better person and that if you look only after yourself you will be lonely.
