How did Martin Scorsese finance his early films?

Especially concerning Taxi Driver. It was distributed by Columbia but I can’t find information to connect Columbia to the original production. Any help would be SO appreciated! I’m sure the film buffs out there won’t have a problem finding this one.

It was an independent production by Julia Phillips and Michael Phillips, who won the Best Picture Oscar for The Sting a few years earlier. Taxi Driver won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and Columbia Pictures bought the distribution rights..
