A project of a non profit organization operation, the dental clinic has operated for 43 years. A health clinic catering to the needs of pregnant women and infants was operated by the clinic in the organization’s building for many years. Children also have access to dental care at the clinic. To convert the former garage into a small dental office, the organization raised $10,000 in donations. Since equipment had been donated by dentists previously for the old dental clinic, these were the ones used for the office.

The clinic does not accept those who have the money for private dental care since it does not want competition with other dentists. Eligibility of the clinic’s services and the charge for those who are qualified are decided by the clinic’s sliding scale. The clinic would turn down a family of four that earns a monthly income of $1,000 or more. Dental examination is made available to that same family if their monthly earnings are from $800 to $1,000. Adult patients show up at the clinic, and you can tell that dental care was not accessible for them maybe all their lives. The clinic has a lot of children patients. Presently the clinic only makes weekly schedules for 20 patients, but dentists are still able to take in more. When dentists were kept waiting for patients who failed to keep their appointments, the secretary started scheduling appointments on specific days but not specific times. Patients who come on the day they are scheduled are seen by the dentist according to who came first. We teach a lot of personal oral hygiene to everybody who comes in. The clinic gives out toothbrushes and dental floss to patients who apparently don’t have them and haven’t used them.
