Virgin Past And Present
Thinking back to the late 60′s we may be able to see how Richard Branson began his career. At the tender age of fifteen, Branson had already begun his first business venture by selling Christmas Trees. In spite of the collapse of this, Branson strived to succeed. At seventeen he began making student magazines and began a new charity. Branson opened Virgin Mail Order, a record shop on Oxford Street, in the 70′s. The buzz the opening of the store caused was exceptional, selling Mike Oldfield’s ‘Tubular Bells’, which sold more than 5 million copies.
In the 80′s, Virgin Atlantic Airways launched to fly the world to many different extravagant destinations. Next Virgin Holidays was formed; Virgin’s commitment was not only to get people to their destinations in style but also to keep them there in style.
In the 90′s Virgin.com continued to grow despite selling Virgin Records to Thorn EMI. Next Virgin Radio was introduced. Later Virgin vodka and cola was produced, which has bought forth a ferocious battle for the cola and vodka market.
Following this V2 music was created, along with Virgin trains and Virgin Brides. To much disappointment, Virgin Brides cannot be added to Branson’s successes. Branson achieved quite a bit in a very short space of time in the 90′s; but this was not the end. In 1999, Virgin Mobile hit the mobile market. This launch changed the way in which people communicated, by giving them a cheaper and fairer option than that offered by many others.
During 2000, nine new companies were introduced, including Virgin Wine and Virgin Cars. Branson launched Virgin Galactic in 2004. It seems the 21st century was a lucrative time for him, and the man seems unstoppable what with him continuing to launch more and more companies globally. What does Virgin have in store for the future? Well, this is very difficult to foresee, but we are certain to see more innovations!

Pure Moods, Vol. I $7.96 New Age music, ambient electronica, and spiritualized hip-hop received their first major, K-Tel-like treatment in 1996 when Virgin Records assembled Pure Moods. The “As Seen on TV” compilation quickly became a hot seller, and it would be nice to think that its popularity has as much to do with the music as the marketing. To be sure, Pure Moods offers genre hits aplenty: from Enya’s “Orinoco Flow” … |

Mike Oldfield – The Art in Heaven Concert (Live in Berlin) $16.99 Time, place, and content come together nicely in this concert extravaganza, spectacularly produced by German light-show specialists Art in Heaven and featuring guitarist-keyboardist Mike Oldfield and a cast of thousands (well, dozens) performing in Siegessaule Square in Berlin on New Year’s Eve 1999. Totaling about one hour, the show is divided between “classic songs” (including a brief version of… |

Rockopedia-MikeOldfield $0.99 This is an entry in Rockopedia, my “experiment in autobiography”, based around the lives (and, sadly, in too many cases, the deaths) of people I have known and written about since my first article was published in Melody Maker, on July 7, 1957. It is very much a work in progress, and further entries will be added as and when they have been completed. This one is devoted to fun and games with Mike O… |
