Old Man Winter is coming
Old Man Winter is coming…
I know, I know, we have officially transited the Summer/Fall meridian and I am writing about winter, but as the old saying goes: the early bird catches the worm.
In last months e–newsletter we reported on ice back up and the importance of curing or providing remedy while the weather is still favorable. In concert with that theme, we thought we would make mention of the importance of good attic cavity ventilation given the relevance and/or the roll it plays in helping to neutralize ice back up problems.
Most homeowners don’t pay much mind to the absolute need for good attic ventilation. In fact, poor attic ventilation contributes to a plethora of potentially damaging house issues. Some examples would include ice backup, mold, premature roof shingle failure, premature air conditioning/heating plant failure, and exorbitant heating and cooling bills. These are just some of the subtleties that can easily be traced to poor attic ventilation.
So how might the lay person determine if they are at risk? Actually it’s easier than you might think. A good first step would be to make your way into the attic cavities(s) with a simple outdoor or indoor thermometer. Once there, take note of the temperature and apply this simple rule of thumb: the cavity temperature should read within plus or minus 5 degrees (Fahrenheit) of the ambient (outside) temperature. Chances are most of you trying this won’t even need a thermometer. Even at this time of the year the attic temperature will be noticeably different, that is it will indeed feel much warmer than the outside temperature almost immediately upon gaining access to the attic.
Once you have made that determination we suggest you invite a consultant from our company in for a professional opinion and solution…before Old Man Winter arrives.

Hot Rocks 1964-1971 $17.42 It’s the rare greatest-hits album that takes on a life of its own. Generally, best-of collections are superceded by updated retrospectives. Hot Rocks is one of the rare exceptions to the rule. Originally released in 1972, it instantly became the Stones intro of choice, elbowing aside Big Hits, High Tide and Green Grass and Through the Past Darkly. Why? It happened to hit the racks when Mick and co… |
