To duplicate this method when learning a second language, you want to learn through immersion. The idea behind the immersion process is that you go to a country where the language is the native tongue so that you can learn.
This may scare the you know what out of you to begin with. You are going to a country where you don't speak the language, although you will probably have some simple words and understanding of the language. You will be doing a course in the country and learning the language as a child might learn his language.

So in my opinion the best way to learn to speak Italian fast is to go to a Italian speaking country and take a course. An added tip is to stay after the course has finished to reinforce what you have learned by speaking with locals. The best way to do this is to live there for a good time, preferably working or being intergrated into the community. This will do wonders for your understanding of the language. Continue to study the language. Nobody stops learning, even their first language.
