Australian Woman Pioneering Plus Size Modeling
Robyn Lawley, 22, is a gorgeous Australian model. So what, there’s surely plenty of those, right? Well the difference is that Miss Lawley is twice the size of most models. On average, models tend to fall into the 6 – 8 size range, but Lawley is a size 16. Lawley, models plus size clothes. Interestingly, her size range is typical of 80% of the women in her country.
”I knew the minute Robyn walked into my office, she’d be the one,” says Lawley’s agent, Chelsea Bonner, of Bella Model Management. ”I knew she’d be the one to bridge the gap between size and fashion. She’s got everything high fashion looks for, but she’s also got the curves and that’s the difference; she’s the one person who will break the mold, the one who only comes along once in a generation.”
The plus size clothing model has appeared in magazines such as Vogue Italia and Elle France in the span of just a few short months. Even more impressive, Lawley became the centerpiece of a 10 page fashion editorial in Vogue Australia. Ms. Lawley is the first plus size woman to appear in the mag in its 52 year history.
”It wasn’t going to be a cynical exercise or a cheap publicity stunt [to sell magazines] or even a political statement about size,” says Editor Kirstie Clements. “I just wanted to use Robyn because she’s special, she’s absolutely gorgeous and anyone – it doesn’t matter what their size or ethnicity or whatever – who’s going to appear in Vogue has got to be WOW!”
There is no reference in the issue to her being a plus size clothing model, either. It’s just a beautiful woman in a straight designer fashion spread.
”I love fashion,” Lawley says. ”I want to be dressed in amazing clothing, but it’s such a painful experience when labels don’t even cater for your size. It’s like a slap in the face. I want to say: ‘I’m a beautiful girl too, why won’t you cater for me?’” She didn’t set out to start some kind of idealistic modeling revolution, but that seems to be what her modeling career has accomplished. An increasing number of plus size women are finding work as models as the industry looks to appeal to a wider range of consumers and capture the buying power of “real” women. This switch sends the message that women don’t have to match up to unrealistic measurements.
