Neville Marriner
Unusual loyalty?
So get this…. one of my three local classical music stations consistently airs pieces performed by Sir Neville Marriner of the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, more so than any other symphony/ orchestra/ philharmonic. I know so little about the business aspect of classical music- would there be a particular reason behind such a devotion to a conductor? Is it that this orchestra is particularly talented? Fill me in, experts!
Well, it could be, that the programmer has a bias for this group; and there could be a possible “commercial” promotional aspect I suppose; I don’t know: I don’t consider myself to be a particular expert in such matters.
But I would tend to agree with “telsa g”: this group, Marriner and the Academy orchestra, have won many accolades; and are renowned for their consistent high quality of performance and unquestioned integrity of interpretation.
I would call your attention to the conductor’s title: “Sir”. Mr. Marriner’s title is not an hereditary one. When it comes to music, the UK does not bestow such honor, lightly, and without it’s being well-deserved.
