Nat Adderley

New instrument: Trumpet or Sax?
I’ve been playing guitar (and bass) for about 9 years, and I want to branch out and learn other instruments, specifically a jazz horn. I love trumpet/cornet players like Louis, Dizzy, Nat Adderley and Miles, but I also like the saxophonic sounds of Coltrane, Bird, Cannonball Adderley and Charlie Rouse.
So what should I play? What’s easier? What’s faster to learn? Trumpet seems like it would be a bitch at first, dealing with embouchure for the right notes.
Or should I learn piano first?
(I wanted to play saxophone in my youth, but I was tricked into playing clarinet briefly in 5th grade. “It’s easier to learn first”, they said.)
“briefly” meaning for 3 months before I quit.
Also this was 12 years ago. What small amount of knowledge I gained from that is gone.
The instruments’ difficulties are relative. I can play trumpet and french horn, but just squawk on woodwinds. You should pick whichever you like the sound of better.

Work Song $30.40 Work Song is one of the best jazz classics ever in a minor key. The original Nat Adderley recording is the starting point for this new arrangement. After the first time through the head (by the trumpets and altos, of course!), the stop time section from the original is used with the harmonized melody. There is a solid shout chorus that leads to a soft ensemble passage before the solo written for a… |
