The Best Country Songs Are Felt Within You, Not Heard
When hashing out the best songs of all time, the best country songs must be counted, too. Country music began in the mountains as courting music, and crossed trails with the delta blues before it eventually drifted down into the fields where homesick cowboys sang to their horses.
Over the years country music has stayed the most popular music in America, and even overseas. The cause of its success is that the songs are written by real people with real problems. Not the kind of issues that so many pop and rap songs deal with, boys, girls, and bling, but the kind of problems faced by ordinary folk.
Songs about separation, disloyalty, alcohol abuse, bars and roles are what most country vocalists sing about, and there is not anybody in the world who hasn't been touched, in some shape, by all those things. Although few folks can relate to a song about gunning somebody down due to the color of the shirt that he was wearing, snorting cocaine and sporting gold teeth and driving Bentleys, folks know the common-or-garden melancholy of working constantly at a blue-collar job, getting into a beat-up pickup truck, and driving home to a relationship they're trying hard to make work.
Hank Williams sang that he would never get out of this world alive, and all over rural America, normal folks sighed, knowing precisely what he meant. While Bob Dylan was singing songs that had millions of men and women trying to work out what the words meant, Johnny Cash sang about being hungover in a strange place on a Sunday morning, hearing singing in a church, and smelling sizzling bacon frying in someone's kitchen, and nobody had to explain the words to anyone. Rappers sing about being gangsters, and beating their ladies, while country songs are about women who love outlaws because outlaws touch them deep inside their soul.
In 1967 when the country was turning to the counter-culture and drugs, their icon, Bob Dylan, was turning to country music. It isn't a coincidence that his Nashville Skyline album turned into a smash hit and to this day the songs on it are classics that are revered by the rock and roll crowd as much as they are by the country music fans.
There is a reason that there is a term called, country cross-over. It's perhaps because rock 'n roll audiences will always embrace a country frontman, and the explanation is really because the best country songs are always the best songs, period.
This author enjoys listening to the best country songs, including the best country love songs.

East Nashville Skyline $8.00 East Nashville lies just across the Cumberland River from the mansions and skyscrapers Music Row built, but for Todd Snider it may as well be in outer space. On his seventh album, he paints a word-drunk, smart-ass, but always affectionate portrait of this gritty neighborhood–the dead-end dives, low-rent bungalows, and musicians barely scraping by–with a freewheeling comedic spirit as true to cou… |
