Take A Flight To Amsterdam And Detox In The Dutch Capital
Amsterdam may not be the first place that springs to mind when you want to detox, but there are plenty of places in the Dutch capital where you can get that much-needed health-kick. Here’s a taster of some of the feel-good opportunities awaiting you when you step off your flight to Amsterdam:
Recycled bikes
Cycling is a fantastic way to get fit – as Amsterdammers know. So why not jump on a bike and stretch your legs after your flight to Amsterdam? Fill your lungs with fresh air on a scenic ride past ponds and thickets in Vondelpark at the southern tip of the city. For an even greener twist, hire your wheels from Recycled Bikes on Spuistraat. The friendly owner constructs his bikes from abandoned parts found all over town (as you wonder round town look out for the bicycle graveyards where many of the Recycled Bikes come from).
Fresh food
Restaurant De Kas, south of Oosterpark, takes fresh, organic cooking to a new level. The chefs source all their ingredients from the on-site greenhouse, their organic farm or other local, sustainable farms. Before settling down for your meal, pop into the adjoining nursery to see the flourishing vegetables and herbs – staff sometimes give tours when they’re not too busy. The dinner menu changes each day depending on what’s in season, but you pay a fixed price for a choice from three small starters, a main like pheasant with Parma ham, and a dessert. Delicious.
Feel-good fashion
Friendly boutique Nukuhiva, just north of the Western Canal Belt, takes pride in its stock of eco-friendly clothing and accessories. Everything here has sustainable origins and goes way beyond just rows of organic cotton clothing. You’ll find colourful boots from vegan shoe-manufacturer Veja and designer organic denim jeans by Kuyishi.
Pedal power
Another great way to stay in shape: hire a pedal-powered canal bike and take advantage of Amsterdam’s famous waterways. These five seater vessels are an entertaining way to explore the capital. Drift under bridges, wave to pedestrians and explore narrow canals, all under your own steam. Afterwards, head to the city centre’s Morning Star for a bite to eat, where nearly everything on the menu is organic. Try the soup of the week or a bite of crispy, free-range beef croquettes with homemade tartare sauce.
Skincare
We often talk about consuming organic food and drink, but cosmetics matter too. So stock up on natural soaps at the Jordaan’s La Savonnerie – they make and sell over 80 fragrant varieties on the premises. You can also book one of their 20-minute massages, designed to relieve stress and boost circulation. Or you could make your way to skincare shop Zout & Co in the Old West, which is entirely dedicated to organic products made from natural sea salt.
A trip to the Dutch capital could give you that healthy boost you’ve been craving. You’ll find there are plenty of ways to indulge your clean-living side when you take a flight to Amsterdam.
