Mistaken Identity?
My husband was accused of stealing from a grocery store. They informed him that they had him on tape from the previous night, when he asked to view the tape the said it was against store policy. They insisted that he had to leave the store, he asked them to call the police, and the refused. He left the store and called the police from the parking lot, they came and also asked to see the tape and was told also it’s against store policy. A report was filed and at the end of this ordeal the young lady apolized and said it was a case of mistaken identity. What grounds do we have?
You should write a letter to the manager of the grocery store, the home office (if a chain) and to the local paper. Most managers will be sensitive to customers that have been insulted and/or abused. If the people at the store acted unreasonably, they might get fired. If they did it for racist reasons, you might have a case. It sounds like they knew that your husband was not on the tape (otherwise they would have shown it to your husband and/or the police). It looks like they were looking for a reason to harass.
I’d like to see them explain why they refused to call the police when they thought they had caught a shoplifter, especially one that was willing to wait around for the police to arrive.
