Who Is Henry?
Hard-core musical gang Black Flag has had four singers, but Henry Rollins is the best known. You can hear their influences in much of today’s music with thrashing guitars and angst laden vocals. Through his books and spoken word tours, Henry has gained infamy as a wordsmith. He is now a travel host for National Geographic, discovering a mysterious world of reptiles and rituals all over the world. When not wearing out many US passports and travel visas, what type of person is Henry Rollins?
He is said to be a calm loner with the uncertainties of a teenager. Henry tries to forget he’s not on the road when at home in California by keeping his nose in a worthy book. Tom Wolfe, Max Frisch and Henry Miller are among his most beloved authors. Henry prefers the company of books over that of friends because you can bring them any place.
At times he might be reviewing his most recent travel writings. Over the past few years Rollins has increased in his own creative way. In the late eighties, Rollins started his own publishing corporation, naming it after his birthday, 21361. Some of his writings are about roaming like Smile, You’re Traveling, A Preferred Blur and A Dull Roar and others are more like sinister poetry and short stories. There are lessons all of us can learn in some of his tales about trying to obtain travel visas or going through customs.
When at his West Hollywood office, Henry is found sifting through the mail, shipping merchandise or answering e-mails. He truly believes his next next gig could be his last and lives his life in accordance with the DYI (Do It Yourself) ethos. Even at age 50, Rollins still has no time to take it easy and trusts that only he can take care of himself. The government will not be there to give aid when he reaches his seventies.
As far as women or relationships go, Henry keeps most of his love life extremely private with the rare occasions of opening up about one love who died and another who damaged his heart. This could be the reason why Henry doesn’t care for the friendship of a woman, instead opting for travel visas. Have travel visas ever wrecked a man’s love?
Rollins seems like a cool cat that you can relate to once you get past the tattoos and icy stare, despite all the legends and mysteries surrounding him. This might be why National Geographic chose him to bring into main stream living rooms the underground world of snakes. Now performing for USO tours, Henry himself once belonged to an underground world.
