Who sang this ’80s classic Indie love song?

First of all I thought it might be a band called The Mighty Lemon drops, but now I’m not so sure. Then I thought it might be The Icicle Works, but have now dismissed this too. The singer has a deep Southerner’s voice, a little like Billy Bragg. And in the background is a catchy jingly guitar strum. The lyrics include:
