Songs About Driving A Vehicle

Cars are often classed as man’s and girls’ best friends, rivalling the pooches and diamonds. No wonder, therefore, that cars and other kinds of vehicles have been commemorated in songs. Here are five songs commemorating various uses of wheeled vehicles.

1. Locomotion. The song first made it to top of the U.S. chart in 1962 (#1); it was written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin and recorded by Little Eva. In the same year it was successfully covered in French by Sylvie Vartan; and in 1988 the song made a U.S. chart comeback in the #3 place, as the cover by Kylie Minogue. In between those dates the song was hitting the charts in 1974 (#1), thanks to Grand Funk Railroad. The song invites everyone onto a magic locomotion that takes people for a dance with friends and has made it to the U.S. Top 5 three times, each time in a different decade.

2. Harley Davidson. There is a video on the web: in it, the French bombshell Brigitte Bardot, sporting long boots, a leather pinafore dress, and a bedhead, slowly dances around a Harley Davidson. Teasingly, she says that she needs no-one except her Harley Davidson, that is. The naughty French composer Serge Gainsbourg wittingly exploited Bardot’s beauty and sex appeal with this song. As well as the weak spot that both men and women have for a quality motorcycle.  It’s all about the speed, baby…

3. Drive My Car. If a motorcycle was too speedy or not status-y enough, there has always been a car. Well, sometimes it was not available until the girl became famous (and rich enough). But smart girls always knew that, if they were suddenly to make it big, they would need a driver. And a good driver is hard to find. Especially if he is one of the Beatles.

4. Bicycle Race. Taking it from Serge Gainsbourg, Freddie Mercury wanted to ride his bicycle where he liked. We shall not go into details about “riding” and bicycle models. For all we know, Freddie could be inspired by the bicycle nations, like the Chinese or Indians. Oh, and he must have been the driving force behind the cycle lanes.

5. Sleeping in My Car. Driving a car, dancing on locomotion, cycling or gazing adoringly at a Harley Davidson could be very, very tiresome. No wonder then that some would choose to retire to sleep in a car. Sounds boring? Listen to Roxette for an advice. Sleeping in a car will never feel the same again.

Hanson – The Road to Albertane [VHS]

Since bounding into the pop mainstream in 1997, Tulsa-bred Isaac, Taylor, and Zachary Hanson have proven their own abundant musical talent even as early detractors assumed (mistakenly) there were unseen strings controlling the three videogenic teens. Granted Hanson and their record label drafted some well-connected producers, writers, and session players to beef up their platinum debut, Middle of…

Quentin Tarantino came out of nowhere (i.e., a video store in Manhattan Beach, California) and turned Hollywood on its ear in 1992 with his explosive first feature, Reservoir Dogs. Like Tarantino’s mainstream breakthrough Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs has an unconventional structure, cleverly shuffling back and forth in time to reveal details about the characters, experienced criminals who know nex…
