Can Chinese Healing Herbs Give Eczema Relief?
If you have to deal with the itching and burning of eczema, you will be all too aware of the misery that it can cause. Now though, a solution might have been discovered in the form of oriental healing herbs.
New studies, made public for the first time at the yearly gathering of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, suggest that traditional Chinese herbal treatments might be helpful in treating both children and adults.
In an effort to evaluate patient worries about whether such an approach works, and is safe to use, medical researcher Julia Wisniewski, MD, of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York studied 14 young people who were suffering from eczema and were treated using traditional Chinese medicine between August 2006 and May 2008.
All of them drank Erka Shizheng Herbal Tea twice daily, took a herbal bath for at least 15 minutes, and rubbed herbal cream on their skin several times a day. Additionally, they were treated using acupuncture.
At the beginning of the research period, over 50% had severe symptoms, after 8 months of this regime, the majority had only mild symptoms. The children also required less medication (steroids, antibiotics and antihistamines) after just a few months of the start of the treatment.
The herbal treatments were safe, and resulted in no abnormal functioning of the liver or kidneys.
As for eczema in adults, a team of Japanese researchers learned that grown ups can also reap the benefits of traditional Chinese medicine. Their work was based around 274 adults who had dealt with eczema for an average of 12 years. About 30% had symptoms that were classified as severe or very severe.
Following three to four months of being treated with herbal remedies which had been selected and administered based on the subject’s symptoms, 87% were free from eczema symptoms. Another 10% were said to be very much better.
Therefore, while more studies are needed, these research results offer promising results and suggest that, if you suffer with eczema, you should at least be considering the use of Chinese healing herbs or treatments.
