In addition to its lovely climate and year round moderate temperatures, it is no wonder that Hawaii is home to some of the greatest golfing in the country. For golfers and non-golfers alike, the towns of Kihei and Princeville offer entertainment in the sun and plenty of opportunities to explore the great outdoors. Golf courses, the volcano parks, and plenty of beaches make this segment of the planet a leading destination for adventure vacationers.
Kihei is a town on Maui’s southern shore. It is found on the leeward side of the volcano called Haleakala. The climate is arid and the town receives no more than 10 inches of rain per year, making it an perfect place for the year round golfer. Beach vacations that contain a round or two of golf with a view of the ocean is simply a wonderful afternoon.
Some of the better known courses in the area include the Maui Elleair Golf Club. This is a course which has 6,404 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 71. It was planned by Bill Newis and opened in 1987. The Wailea Golf Club is one more destination for the avid golfer. This is an 18 hole course which contains 6,758 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. It was designed by Arthur Jack Snyder and opened in 1971. The Makena Golf Courses are also worth a round or two, as they obtain continuously affirmative comments and take advantage of the relatively dry weather on the leeward side of the volcano.
For those interested in romantic travel and outdoor adventure while exploring Kihei, the Haleakala National Park is at your doorstep. This is a 30,183 acre National Park which surrounds the crater of the volcano. 24,719 acres of the park are designated as wilds and are accessible to hikers and backpackers. The park includes the summit depression, Kipahulu Valley on the southeast, and a variety of remote streams and pools. The park extends to the shoreline. For those interested in hiking, there are two main trails leading into Haleakala from the top. These are known as Sliding Sands Trail and Halemauu Trail.
It’s essential to make a note of a few factors about the trails and park for the volcano adventurer. The high altitude at the summit of the volcano means that some of the hiking can be more demanding than you may imagine. Temperatures are cool, but dehydration is a valid danger.
On the north shore of the island of Kaua’I is Princeville, a small town that really loves its golf. Princeville features two world class championship golf courses called Prince Golf Course and Makai Golf Course. Together they comprise 45 holes of fantastically designed golf. The courses have earned Golf Digest’s score of number one in the State of Hawaii. Golf Digest also graded the courses as number 14 in its register of America’s Best Resort Golf Courses and number thirty nine in America’s Top 100 Greatest Courses.
