Live Album

What is, in your opinion, the definitive live Grateful Dead album?
A friend of mind recently got into the Dead. She’s got several studio albums but none that are live. Her birthday is coming up and I figured as part of her gift I would get her a live GD album…but, I’m having trouble deciding which. Right now it’s between Europe ’72 or the skull and roses album…and I’m leaning more towards Europe ’72.
So, which is your favorite and why?
It would be hard to say that there is one “definitive,” live Grateful Dead album, for the Dead went through so many different musical styles over their thirty years together. The two albums you mention are both terrific, but there is a point that I think should be mentioned. Skull and Roses (originally “Skullfuck.” Changed due to Warner Brothers producers) and Europe ’72 are filled mostly with tight renditions of songs that display some of the Dead’s best musical attributes, but they are not entire sets. The jams and transitions from song to song on the albums that contain entire shows are a big part of what made the Dead unique (aside from great musical taste, talent, skill, and fearless exploration into the far reaches of the musical universe). Therefore, consideration must be given to albums like Live/Dead and the Dick’s Picks series, etc. On the other hand, you say your friend has studio albums. Live performances were typically much longer, spacier, and generally weirder than their studio albums. For instance: Uncle John’s Band. On the studio album, it lasts around 5 or 6 minutes. During live performances, the band would often play that song twice the length of time it was played on Workingman’s Dead. Plus, recordings from the early 70′s were very often more raw than the albums from the same time period. So, if your friend is expecting tight vocal harmonies on songs such as “Attics of my Life,” she could quite conceivably be very surprised when Pig gets up on the stage and COMMANDS her to turn on her lovelight. Everything from ’65 to ’75 is pretty wild. Try something from ’77. I haven’t heard a show from that year that hasn’t been at least good, if not smokin’. I first got hooked on the Dead when I heard the New Year’s run from Winterland in ’77. One of those shows happens to be Dick’s Picks 10, and you can find the rest of the run online on archive.org or nugs.net. So, that’s it for me. Good luck on your quest to find the Dead.
