Were you surprised they used a Leonard Cohen song in the X Factor?
I am a fan of Leonard and recognise his worth, but I’m surprised at this rejuvenation of his works.

This song presents a major problem for me. As it stands, it is an overblown cover of a great cover of an OK original.
Let me explain:-
The original – Leonard Cohen’s version – as used in the Shrek film…. It is OK, I am not a massive fan…
Jeff Buckley’s cover – this for me is one of the best covers I have ever heard. Notice that Jeff, being a true, skillful artist who could write, sing and play with much finesse (as well as having film star looks) was worried about doing the original justice.
The current X-Factor version – I do not like it. Yes, I am likely biased by being a fan of the Jeff Buckley cover.
However – and in answer to your question – I am pleasantly surprised at the choice. Years ago I fantasised that someone would hear that song and be inspired to sing it on Pop Idol/X-Factor. It is great on the one hand that they are revisiting true class; but on the other, it is yet more plundering of existing material. Where are the really good songwriters of today? Being ignored!!!!
