Meteorology Basics: Kinds of Storms
A storm is any disturbed state in the atmosphere that brings severe weather conditions. Adverse weather conditions such as strong winds, hail, thunder, lightning, heavy precipitations, ice storms, and hurricanes are all considered storms. Storms are created when a center of low pressure develops and a high pressure system surrounds it. This combination of opposing forces can create winds and results in the formation of storm clouds.
One dangerous kind of storm is the ice storm. Ice storms make unheated road surfaces too slippery to walk or drive on and when combined with breezy conditions, can take down power lines. Ice storms result when surface temperatures are below freezing and rain falls. This rain freezes upon impact on the ground. This phenomenon is known as glaze. Glaze and ice storms are extremely dangerous for aircraft as it can distort aircraft control mechanisms.
Hailstorms precipitate chunks of ice and usually occur during regular thunder storms. While most hailstones that precipitate from clouds are fairly small, there have been cases of hailstones greater than two inches in diameter and causing injuries to people and significant damage to properties. Thankfully, weather satellites and weather radar imagery can facilitate hail detection.
Firestorms are conflagrations which attain such intensity that they sustain their own wind systems. It can be a naturally occurring phenomenon (observed in the bushfires of Australia), though firestorms can also result from human aggression as in wars and aerial raids (such as the bombings of Dresden in WWII).
