The City of Albany, New York is looking to rename a section of the city known as the “Student Ghetto.” The area is downtrodden and notorious for crime, and city officials hope that by renaming the neighbourhood they will improve its reputation and help it change for the better because people will be more likely to invest in a neighbourhood with a positive sounding name. Dame Joan Sutherland, a famous Opera singer and native of Sydney, Australia, passed away recently in Switzerland at the age of 83. She had a full and impressive career, with many accomplishments and contributions to the local opera and music scene. A motion has been set forth to have the landmark Sydney Opera House renamed in her honour. New South Wales Opposition Leader Barry O’Farrell proposed the renaming, “I can’t think of a more fitting tribute” he told the Herald. A post office in Rye, NY has been renamed after the woman who was instrumental to its construction and an important influence on human rights in the 1930 and 40s. Caroline O’Day was a Congresswoman and a suffragist who founded the local League of Women Voters. Congresswoman Nita Lowey, made a speech during the ceremony. “We stand on her shoulders,” she said from the front steps of the post office at 41 Purdy Ave. O’Day was also involved in the building of the high school and worked hard to end discrimination and improve employment opportunities for the disabled and protection against child labour. file renamer
