The Healthy Qualities of Cinnamon
One childhood treat I fondly remember was cinnamon toast, the cinnamon swirled through the bread and a light coating of frosting on top. We kids also sprinkled cinnamon powder and sugar on our toast as a topping. All our homemade bread now contains a teaspoon of cinnamon. People notice and compliment its flavor.
Cinnamon is an ancient spice. Even the Bible speaks of using cinnamon, especially because of its aroma. Chinese writings talk of cinnamon nearly five thousand years ago. Cinnamon was used in embalming in ancient Egypt and Rome. Egypt also used cinnamon in flavoring food and as a medicine. By the Middle Ages, only the rich could afford these spices. In fact, a person’s rank was announced by how many spices he owned.
The word ‘cinnamon’ comes from the Greek word kinnamomon and this comes from the name Ceylon. Cinnamon is the brown bark of the cinnamon tree. A rolled up piece of bark we call a cinnamon stick is officially called a quill. You can purchase cinnamon in this form or as a powder. Cinnamon gets its scent and flavor from a chemical compound called cinnamaldehyde.
Genuine cinnamon only comes from Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), where over 11,000 tons is exported each year. To picture this amount, think of 150,000,000 large spice bottles filled with it! But most powdered cinnamon sold in the United States is actually cassia, or Chinese cinnamon. If you want to find the sweeter, more refined tasting Ceylon cinnamon, go to a local spice shop.
Though most commonly used as a spice, cinnamon has a variety of health benefits. For example, harmful cholesterol can be kept down by taking just ½ teaspoon if cinnamon a day. Other studies suggest that cinnamon may help regulate blood sugar, making it especially beneficial for people with Type 2 diabetes.
The January 17th, 1995 issue of Weekly World News contained a list of 21 health problems or diseases that can be cured or at least helped by honey and cinnamon as researched by western scientists. These include heart disease, insect bites, arthritis, bladder infections, toothache, and common colds.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture in Maryland showed that cinnamon reduced the spread of some cancer cells such as leukemia and lymphoma. It also aids in dissolving blood clots. For some, cinnamon has even reduced arthritic pain. Cinnamon is an excellent inhibitor of food spoilage and bacterial growth, meaning it a natural food preservative.
Regular use of cinnamon also boosts brain power and fights the E. coli bacteria in unpasteurized juices. It is a rich source of calcium, manganese, iron, and fiber, and helps remove bile from the bowel thus reducing the risk of colon cancer. Fiber in cinnamon can also help with the relief of constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.
Cinnamon has antifungal, antibacterial and antiparasitic properties. It helps in fighting off yeast infections in the mouth and vagina, and reduces the risk of stomach ulcers and head lice. It is due to its three basic types of essential oils that gives cinnamon this remarkable power.
How about trying the cinnamon based ‘thieves’ oil’ so named because grave robbers sanitized themselves from the ‘demons’ of bubonic plague by washing in it. {It is made from equal amounts of cinnamon bark, eucalyptus, lemon, and clove with rosemary therapeutic grade essential oils You make it mixing equal amounts of rosemary therapeutic grade essential oils and eucalyptus, cinnamon bark, lemon, and clove}. This is mixed with a carrier of olive oil or jojoba.
Besides its health and seasoning qualities, cinnamon has also been used for warming. Cinnamon, as a tea with ginger, provides relief from the onset of a flu or cold. Some women say this drink also relieves them of menstrual problems.
Overdosing on cinnamon can be toxic so use it with caution. Cinnamon does not replace needed medications either. Cinnamon should be stored in glass containers in a dark, dry, cool place. As long as it smells like cinnamon, it is still fresh.
Cinnamon acts as a tonic to the entire body. Just make sure you purchase cinnamon powder from a store that sells bulk herbs so as to receive the full benefit this amazing spice has to offer.
