Julia Gottlieb: Jazz With A Twist
Julia Gottlieb has the power to interpret classic jazz standards with fresh emotion and effortless delivery. Her voice is soothing and smoky, evoking chanteuses from eras past while simultaneously conjuring a new style all her own. Most recently, she’s ventured into the world of songwriting, penning her own material in an effort to explore more personal territory.
“I always felt like I might have it in me,” she confesses, “and [I finally] have the confidence and courage to do so.”
When hit with ideas for song lyrics and melodies, Julia often sings them into a portable recorder; other times, she transcribes them into her cell phone.
“I literally write songs in text messages because I haven’t yet bought a book to write them in,” she laughs.
Julia collaborates with other musicians who help bring her songs to life. Much of the lyrical content centers around love: love that’s blossoming, love that’s fading, love that’s falling apart, or love that should have been. She describes the process as being very cathartic and rewarding.
“[Songwriting] is still so new to me and I don’t want anyone to take anything personally,” she reflects. “But of course, songwriters have to write about life and love and things that they have lost and have experienced.”
Julia began classical piano and voice training at such a young age, she is unable to remember a time before music. After attending New York’s New School for Jazz and Contemporary music, she toured extensively with both a guitar trio and a swing group, respectively. Though passionate about touring, the self-professed homebody has enjoyed living in Los Angeles while recording her album.
“It’s nice to be home, playing gigs, singing in the studio and collaborating with people.”
In addition to her upcoming record release, Julia is working on an album of children’s lullabies.
“A lot of the songs I write are almost like nursery rhymes,” she explains. “That’s the kind of writing that I feel really comes naturally to me.”
Doing what truly comes naturally to her is a fairly new endeavor for Julia, as well. For many years, she was faced with the adversity caused by well-meaning teachers and critics who urged her to sing with a “bigger” voice. Thanks to positive reinforcement from various mentors along the way, Julia learned to appreciate her sound for its own uniqueness.
“It’s hard to accept yourself,” she admits, “but there are going to be people who love you just as you are. When I realized I could embrace [my own style and voice], other people embraced it, too. There have always been people who embraced my voice, but I couldn’t see that because I was beating myself up so much.”
Armed with a new album, budding skills as a songwriter, upcoming shows throughout L.A., and the confidence that comes with self-acceptance, Julia Gottlieb has truly come into her own…and is ready to take on the world.
