Jazz Record
Who were a few cool jazz guitarists? Who did they record with?
I have to write a little bit on cool jazz guitarists for my jazz class.
Grant Green- made a very cool album with Herbie Hancock on piano.
John McLaughlin- in addition to leading a variety of groups, also played with Miles Davis.
Joe Pass- His series of recordings with Oscar Peterson are legendary
Kenny Burrell- played with many different jazz greats
Mundell Lowe- Mississippi-born, mostly has made his living teaching college and composing in Hollywood but has a fine body of recorded work
Charlie Christian- died too young but was a featured member of Benny Goodman’s band
Charlie Byrd- an incredible career
Chet Atkins- known as a country guitarist, he was also one of the better jazz guitarists, making a seminal album with Les Paul.
Les Paul- in addition to his inventions leading to present-day recording, Paul was an innovative, stunning guitarist. One of the best ever.
Wes Montgomery
Larry Coryell- he was a rising star in the early 1970s but sort of vanished.
I’ve listed guitarists who played strictly jazz, with the exception of Atkins and McLaughlin, who did some stirring rock with jazz leanings.
