#1- The costs for internship are a bit high.
There are some online platforms and companies that can help you submit applications for free. That however is just about the only thing you’ll get for free. Before you submit any applications, you need to understand first that considerable costs are involved. The fare and insurance costs can go for as high as $2000.
#2- You might not be able to get free board and lodging.
There are many full time foreign employees working in Japan that do enjoy the benefits of free accommodations and meals. This is especially true for the numerous winter resorts that usually hire foreign workers. Those on internship programs however may not always get the same favor.
The good news is that there are employers that offer accommodations at reduced costs for internship Japan participants. You can choose to live in your employer’s dorm and pay about 15,000 yen every month. Meals can cost an additional 60,000 yen a month. This is pricey enough but expect to pay even more if you choose to organize your own accommodations. You may have to spend about 100,000 yen a month.
#3- You can choose between summer and winter resorts.
In the same vein as typical work in Japan for foreign employees, internships can be categorized as summer or winter work. If you plan to go during the warm months, pick Okinawa as a destination. Its beaches are a lot like Hawaii and are relaxing to work in. If you plan to go during the cold season, choose Hokkaido, the spot with one of the finest powder in Japan.
#4- You can choose to rent or use your own stuff.
It’s more convenient to rent equipment especially if you plan to go for a winter resort. This is simply a practical choice. Rentals for boots can go for around 30,000 yen while winter clothing can go for an additional 20,000 yen. You might consider bringing your own gear if you are a bit on the big size. Most local boots are less than 30 centimeters in length.
#5- You have to learn Japanese.
Interns are expected to perform duties similar to regular employees. This includes talking to customers and employers. This really just means that you will have to be familiar with the local tongue. This can be a bit difficult since you’d have to get your head around countless characters in hiragana, kanji and katakana. Add to these the honorific terms that you also need to memorize. There are a couple of different ways you can learn though including on the spot experience based classes and short courses that go for $300.
The idea of going to work in Japan as an intern can get pretty exciting. Just be sure though that you’ve got your head around the basic facts you need to keep in mind. This is especially true for the costs involved.
